Dari berita yang diketahui bahwa gempa terjadi pada 7,3 skala richter gempa tektonik 30 Km di bawah permukaan laut di Tasikmalaya.Gempa ini dirasakan hampir semua daerah di Jawa Barat seperti Garut, Bandung, Cirebon, Sukabumi,Ciamis, Banjar,Pangandaran dan kota-kota lainnya termasuk Jakarta, bahkan gempa terasa sampai Jawa Tengah seperti daerah Cilacap, Purwerejo,Purwekerto dan Majenang. Akibat gempa yang terjadi ini, banyak rumah warga yang retak dan kemacetan di jalan raya akibat kepanikan warga karena gempa. Bahkan saat aku mendengarkan radio Elshinta, kantor walikota Tasikmalaya plafon dan genteng-gentengnya ambrol ke bawah sehingga menimbulkan korban luka diantaranya adalah wakil wali kota Tasikmalaya yang dilarikan ke Rumah Sakit Tasikmalaya.
Menurut BMG,kemungkinan gempa susulan akan terjadi dan berpotensi terjadi tsunami.
